Why do you blog?

Why-do-you-blog

As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m participating in Scott Bishop’s 28 day blogging challenge.

What are your blogging goals?

Many of the 28 day challenge participants are working to increase their page views, increase their subscriber base, make more money from their blog, etc. And while all of these items are worthy goals, I’m not focused on any of that for this blog.

So why am I doing it? Simply…

for my own enjoyment.

I blog for me

As I mentioned in my guest post on JohnChow.com, Real life lessons from Dear Me: A Blogger’s Tale, blogging can be therapeutic. It’s educational (for learning & teaching), it’s expressive, it’s creative, it’s conversational and it’s fun. It is your own personal broadcasting platform to the world!

I’ve been writing for many different sites for a long time, and most of those sites have a very specific purpose or a confined set of topics. I write about technology, I write about my neighborhood community and I write for a few other sites that I’m not going to list here.

Freedom

This little personal blog of mine has no confines. No topic is off-limits and no subject is out of bounds. There are no pre-defined formats, nor are there a strict set of categories that limit my scope.

No rules, no confines? That can be a very liberating concept.

  1. This is so true. Yes, I blog as part of my job(s), but I also have two personal blogs- one about TV and the other about whatever I want. I don’t even care if any one reads them. I blog there for myself, because I like it. I like looking back at old posts, just to see what I was feeling or thinking that day. I totally agree with you- I blog for me.

    1. Thanks for the input Danielle. I think everyone should have a “free for all” blogging space. It’s easy to get confined when you’re writing/blogging for websites with narrow focuses.

  2. 1) it beats talking to myself. 2) It helps me organize my thoughts. 3) I enjoy the act of writing. And…in a distant 4) I get paid by some clients to do so (not on my site).

    1. But hey, talking to yourself could be a good source of new blog post material. Your 2, 3 and 4 points apply to me as well.

  3. I like to share; that’s really the reason for it all. Whether it’s something funny or interesting I found out in the wilds of the internets or a photo I’ve captured or some personal thoughts, I enjoy sharing.

  4. I do it for my own enjoyment as well. Well, that and entertaining others with my life crazy life stories. I don’t get paid and I could care less how many people I have reading it. It’s a way to get feelings out (like journaling) and show others that no matter how bad they think they have it, someone out there has it worse.

  5. I made a resolution to write more so i started a brand new blog to give me something to work on when I have no fiction itching to get out.

It is partially just for fun and partially vanity as well. It makes me feelgood to get feedback or find out people have read and hopefully liked what I posted.
